Spiriutal or emtional ?

Christian denominations practices are divided on the realm of the workings or manifestations of the Holy Spirit. Why is this? I have been to different denomiations and it appears that the pentacostals seem to emphasise spiritual things to the point that it can be confusing. They using terms such as "God has a word for you brother, or God told me such and such".... I see it to be an easy manipulation tool. People can use these terms or any scripture to get what they want. It makes knowing truth very hard to find. How can a person know they are really experiencing God with this stuff going on ? Does having manifsetations mean you are some how closer to God than other bodies of Christ ? What about signs and wonders? And how do these teachings differ from cults ?
