Guys and girls: confused! what does he mean???

so there was this guy i met that has problems with his gf. after meeting me, they broke up. i met his friends and one commented "i think she would be a great gf even though i dont know her, do you like her?". he said he didnt know since he still cared for his ex. well he asked me out but i refused saying i didnt want to keep it a secret. 4 days later, he went back with the ex. his friends are mad about it since they knew i liked him and cant believe he led me on since i was so kind, understanding, cute, and nice. he told me that he wished he took the chance with me but he was impulsive breaking up and getting back together with the ex on that day. today, 5 days later he told me: "im irritated right now because so much people are questioning me. i wish i never took the chance with you. i wish i never broke up with her. but i am happy we are friends and thats what i wanted it to be. but noody really likes me on your side. i messed up anyways.
