Can you get from San Francisco to Big Sur using Highway #1? Google maps only uses Highway 101 route?

Planning a drive up the west coast from San Diego to San Francisco and want to drive Highway #1 as much as I can. I want to make a stop at Big Sur but using Google Maps leaving Big Sur to get to San Fran the only route Google shows is for me to back track south and hit up the 101 heading north. Please help
