I have a period question. please answer girls only!?

i'm on my first period. i was playing basketball yesterday and i didn't have one more pad left so i finally found a lite tampon and pout it in. i wore it for about half an hour waiting for my game to stop but it was really uncomfortable! so i toke is out for the past two days my period had been so lite that i was only using a liner and there would be barley any blood. but when i wiped there would be. when i removed the tampon there was brown really thick blood. is this normal??? help!!!
