What does a pinched nerve in the neck feel like?

My chiropractor thinks I that I get a pinched nerve in my neck when I move my neck through certain motions. I have pain in my right pinkie and ring finger when I close my hand. If the nerve was involved wouldn't it hurt (all the time) regardless of whatever I was doing with my hand?
