Is the Afrikaans language uniform or different?

There are regional and ethnic varieties. Not as varied as English - due to far shorter history and lesser geographic distribution. "Standaard Afrikaans" (the variety used in formal speech and writing) is also centrally regulated by the "Afrikaanse Taalraad" (Language Board) wheras English has no such authority. Wikipedia has fairly good articles about Afrikaans and links to other good sources.
